FAQ

Good to know

Should I choose wood or composite?

The template compares cost, maintenance, lifespan, appearance, and warranty expectations.

What is the best material for a privacy fence?

Cedar looks best and resists rot naturally but wants periodic sealing; vinyl costs more up front and then asks nothing of you for decades. The right answer usually comes down to your maintenance appetite and the look you want from the street.

How long does a composite deck last?

Quality composite boards carry 25-50 year warranties and won't splinter, rot or need staining — the frame beneath is pressure-treated lumber, so proper flashing and ventilation of that structure is what actually determines lifespan.

Do fence or deck projects need permits?

Usually yes for decks — they're structures with footings and load — and often for fences above a certain height or on corner lots. A good builder handles permits and HOA paperwork as part of the job rather than leaving it on you.
